The course will focus on the System Approach Framework application for Coastal Research and Management. The SAF is a methodology that has been designed, developed and tested by various institutes and universities across the European Union where multidisciplinary teams were involved in the analysis of coastal problems, engaging in inter- and transdisciplinary work with society and policy, tackling environmental problems in the coastal zone, aiming to improve the ecological sustainability, economic efficiency, and social equity.
During the course all five SAF steps will be addressed both theoretically and during exercises or group work: Issue Identification – the problem diagnosed by stakeholders; System Design – conceived virtual system; System Formulation – made simulation model; System Appraisal – tested model and run for several scenarios; System Output – stakeholders deliberate the scenarios. The other aspects as understanding the system using Ecosystem Service approach and evaluating the management success by Coastal indicator system will be addressed as well.
